Artist's Comments

The intent of this peice is to portray a spacey vision of a being who is the Master of the Universe. I hope you all like it. I do. :D

The image was designed as a large poster so this preview image really does NOT do it justice. There is a lot of detail in it that simply does not show up at this low resolution.

PRINTS ARE AVAILABLE!!!

PS: This image actually works pretty good as a wallpaper. Give it a try and let me know what you think. :D

Thanks Phil! This is the image I've been working on. Think it's good enough to sell? I really like it. I think it will look awesome as a large poster (24x36). I'm definitely going to order one. :D

BTW, I've been printing out the Deep Ocean Surge image as an 11x14 image (on my Epson 1280), framing them in a 16x20 frame and givng them as gifts. I've been getting a lot of really nice comments. I gave one to my friend for his birthday and he said it's the best present he got! :D I think there's some hope for me after all.

Cool Piece ... Great job .... I grew up in the era of posters (blacklight .. etc)

I remember when you 'floated' the question of prints in your journal poll .. and then you didn't seem to follow up

a couple questions:

When you are aiming for 24x36 print size ... what is the render size and quality (.. the batteries are dead in my calculator :D .. )

and

Do you need to be a subscriber to have a prints account? .. I might be able to swing the Prints Account fee $$ when I'm ready ... but I cannot do the subscription fee at all ..

Keith,

Thank you! Now, the answers to all your questions:

aiming for 24x36 print size ... what is the render size and quality?
My target size for this particular image was actually 20x30, but it works for 24x36 as well (same aspect ratio of 1.5). Because I wanted to have a border around it and title at the bottom, the image was render at 5400x9000 (an aspect ratio of 1.667). The overall image size is 6666x10000 including the border. If I wanted the image to go edge to edge I would have rendered at 6000x9000. I was shooting for 300dpi. So at 24x36 this image is 278dpi. Which should look pretty damn good, even close up. My settings; quality=2000, Oversampling=1, Filter Radius=0.3. It took about 30 hours to render.

Do you need to be a subscriber to have a prints account?
When you buy a print account ($25 one time fee) you get a 3 month subscription. However, one would surmise from the following DA statement that a subscription is NOT required to have a print account; print accounts are lifetime accounts and never expire even if your deviantART subscription does, but you might want to check with them just to make sure. And just for the record, a subscription is only $30/year. That's pretty cheap ($2.5/month). You'd spend more than that on a fluffy drink at Starbucks.

Have a great day!

Thanks for the quick reply ... I don't have the head for the math these days :D .. Those render sizes are mind boggling .. my largest to date has been 3200x2400 so that I could test the supposed anti-aliasing vector engine that photoshop uses (so I've been told, anyway) .. you could "double" your render and resize ... hehehe

So if one were to assume that you aren't rendering at that size for every project ... you go back and do a "Poster Version" when you feel a piece is worthy?

Maybe I'll try and see what it's like to do one of my "Hearts" at that size .. with the photoshop work and all ... sounds like a challenge to work at that size (with 512MB Ram) ... (my first computer had 256KB.. amiga ;) )

Thanks again

NP! Actually Photoshop has a pretty nice resample function. Does a pretty good job of maintaining the original charateristics of your image when you downsample. Not sure about the upsample though.

So if one were to assume that you aren't rendering at that size for every project ... you go back and do a "Poster Version" when you feel a piece is worthy?
The short answer is Yes. The long answer is; I've generally been focused on Wallpaper sized images so I haven't really been going down the print road until just recently. The first print was my Deep Ocean Surge Poster which was an afterthought when someone told me I should make a poster out of the Deep Ocean Surge wallpaper. Master of the Universe however, struck me as a good poster right off the bat so I decided to design for print and submit it that way.

Sorry to hear about your computer memory. My system has 3GB. I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to run into those problems. I don't want to be limited if I can help it. At any rate, good luck with that big render and I would like to know how it goes for you.

Take care :D
